There is nothing like waking up to fresh air, hearing the sound of birds, and feeling disconnected from the world. But a great camping trip starts before you hit the road. The right gear keeps you comfortable, safe, and ready for wherever your adventures take you.

With that in mind, we chose six camping essentials that make a big difference and make your experience camping with people you love much better and more relaxing!

1) Bug Spray

Mosquitoes and biting flies can make you lose your mind, but there is an easy way to avoid them!

Why it matters:

  • Helps you sleep better and enjoy meals outside.

  • Reduces itchiness and irritation so you can focus on the fun.

Quick tip: Apply bug spray to exposed skin and lightly to clothing (follow the label instructions). If you are camping near water, reapply more often.

2) Plates and Cups

It is easy to forget the basics when you are focused on tents and sleeping bags. Then you arrive, you are starving, and you realize you brought no dishes! That’s why we are here, to remind you what you can’t forget!

Why it matters:

  • Makes meals easier.

  • Helps you portion food and reduce waste.

Quick tip: Bring one durable plate and cup per person, plus a lightweight bowl if you like soups or oatmeal. Add a small sponge and biodegradable soap for quick cleanup.

3) Cooking Gear

Even simple camp meals feel special. A few reliable cooking tools can make your trip even better.

Why it matters:

  • Helps you cook safely and efficiently, whether you are using a stove or campfire.

  • Makes it possible to enjoy warm coffee, breakfast, and easy dinners without stress.

Starter cooking kit checklist:

  • Portable stove or grate (depending on your campsite setup)

  • Pot and pan (or one multipurpose pot)

  • Spatula or spoon, and tongs

  • Cutting board and small knife

  • Cooler and food storage containers

Quick tip: Prep what you can at home. Pre-chop ingredients and portion seasonings into small containers.

4) Lighter

Fire is essential for cooking, making the perfect s’mores night, and sometimes it can even save your life, so make sure there is always one in your bag!

Why it matters:

  • Makes it easy to light a campfire, stove, or lantern.

  • Saves time when the wood is damp or the weather is windy.

Quick tip: Pack at least two ways to light a fire, such as a lighter plus waterproof matches or a ferro rod. Keep one in a dry bag.

5) Flashlight

Once the sun goes down, a good light source is essential.

Why it matters:

  • Helps you move around safely at night.

  • Makes cooking, finding gear, and late-night restroom trips much easier.

Quick tip: A headlamp is often more useful than a handheld flashlight because it keeps both hands free. Do not forget extra batteries or a fully charged power bank.

6) First Aid Kit

Minor cuts, blisters, and insect bites are common when you go camping. Being prepared keeps small issues from becoming something that could end your trip.

Why it matters:

  • Helps you treat small injuries quickly.

  • Gives peace of mind when you are far from stores or medical help.

Quick tip: Include blister care (moleskin or blister pads), bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and any personal medications.

Final Packing Reminder

Before you leave, do a quick “last look” check:

  • Can you eat, drink, and cook comfortably?

  • Can you see and move safely at night?

  • Can you handle small emergencies?

Pack wisely, camp safely, and enjoy every moment out there!
